Since
the Vegas attack the thought of Active Shooter Response Training has been on
everyone’s mind. I have seen a variety of advertisements for such
training. In and of itself that isn’t a bad thing and it doesn’t automatically mean
that those that are offering Active
Shooting Response Training are trying to take advantage of a bad
situation. The unfortunate reality is that this type of training has
become a necessity in today’s world and there are quality instructors out there that can provide such a service. The better trained and prepared
people are to avoid or deal with these types of worst-case
scenarios the better their chances of surviving.

That
being said, it’s important to understand that training of this nature
is like everything else in life. There is good, there is bad, and there
is the outright dangerous. If you choose to seek out Active Shooter
Response Training, whether for yourself or your organization, it’s
in your best interest to make sure that the training you receive will
provide you with practical solutions and realistic options within the
confines of a worst-case scenario.

-Is
the course based solely on talking / lecture or does it emphasize
“hands-on” training? Powerpoint presentations combined with informative
lectures are great BUT they DO NOT provide realistic and practical
TRAINING! The term training
means that you must mentally and physically practice the skills and
apply the knowledge during the class. This is usually done through
physical drills and realistic scenarios. If the course or class neglects
the “hands-on” portion it will not adequately prepare
anyone to save themselves or anyone else during an active shooter
event.

-Is
the course being taught only by law enforcement or military personnel?
While this alone isn’t a bad thing it’s very important to note that what
law enforcement officers and soldiers are trained to do during
scenarios like this is dramatically
different than what us civilians should be doing. Often times the
instructors forget that they are presenting to civilians and tend to
wander into areas that simply don’t apply to civilians. Sometimes they
even present techniques and tactics that might work
well for armed police and soldiers but may fail miserably for an
unarmed civilian. The best instructors will have an equal mix of
specialized training from various fields to include law enforcement,
military, and the civilian world OR they will co-teach with qualified
civilian instructors.

-Does the course include “hands-on”
practice of physical survival skills? If so are these self-defense
skills very simple and universal for most or are they heavily based on
complex martial arts or defensive tactics training? Remember this
will likely be a single training course so the skills covered MUST BE
simple to learn, easy to remember, and applicable under the extreme
stress of a life-threatening situation. They must be high percentage
skills, meaning those skills most likely to work
for the majority of the people, the majority of the time, and under
the majority of similar circumstances. The course should also include methods for
getting bystanders to assist and engage the threat when possible as
opposed to just teaching individuals to engage the shooter
by themselves.

-Does the course cover the
physiological aspects of dealing with extreme violence? When faced with a
worst-case scenario of this nature we all experience the dreaded
adrenal rush. If you aren’t familiar with it or you have no idea how
it’s
going to affect your ability to function under stress then you are not
fully prepared to deal with a worst-case scenario.

-Does
the course cover mental preparation (Mind-Set) and it’s relation to
surviving extreme violence? The reality is that the Mind-set is often
the determining factor for one’s ability to survive worst-case scenarios
like an active shooter
event. You can learn the best strategies and physical tactics in the
world but if you lack the appropriate Mind-Set those skills will be next
to useless when violence erupts. If this component is not addressed
during the course then sadly the course is not
providing realistic solutions for these types of scenarios.

I have trained with numerous instructors in various styles, systems, and training methodologies. I have earned numerous black belts and have attained well over a dozen instructor certifications. I have had the privilege of training men, women, teens, and children from all walks of life to include airline personnel and law enforcement officers from around the world. I don't post this to brag as I will be the first to admit that I don’t know it all. I want people to know that I am a perpetual student, always learning and trying to improve the knowledge and skills that I possess, not only for myself but for those I may someday have the privilege of teaching…those that may someday be forced to rely on this knowledge to protect themselves or their loved ones.

As I surf the net I am often angered and agitated by some of the nonsense that I see being passed off under the guise of “self-defense”. Why should I care? What does it matter to me if the charlatans of the world want to take advantage of unsuspecting people that want to learn how to protect themselves? I will tell you why it matters to me...because I was once one of those unsuspecting people. I was taken advantage of by instructors claiming to teach "self-defense". I invested many years in training, travel, as well as hard-earned money into the belief that I was learning to protect myself. Unfortunately, that just wasn't the case. While I was learning to improve myself physically and mentally, it had little to do with my personal safety or the safety of my loved-ones. In fact, most of what I had learned was essentially useless in that respect. Eventually I realized I been brainwashed into believing something that just wasn't true. Fortunately this realization came BEFORE I was forced to find out that what I had been taught most likely wouldn't work in real life and in fact may have even made things worse.

I have spent every moment since learning as much as I can about crime and violence and what people can do to protect themselves. I do this because I despise those that think they can take whatever they want by means of force or the threat of force. I also do this because I despise those that take advantage of people's fears by telling them what they want to hear or by trying to sell them something that likely won't work in order to make a few bucks. I am often blunt about my opinions in this matter. Sometimes I offend people and most often it's those instructors in question. It's not my goal to offend people but I can't stand to watch others be taken advantage of as I once was. I refuse to apologize for that. I am a student and instructor of personal safety because I believe that good people have the right to feel safe and secure in the world they live in. I do this because I feel it's important to provide people with the knowledge and skills to keep themselves safe, so they don't have to rely on others...those that unfortunately can sometimes be unreliable. I do this because there is no better feeling than knowing that someday the information I passed along could ultimately save a life or at the least prevent someone from becoming a victim. I do this because there are already too many people out there passing along misinformation or just downright dangerous material.

I can never make any guarantees about what I have to offer. I can't tell people that they will be given the be-all-end-all to personal safety. I can't tell people that they will never be forced to face a dangerous or scary situation. I can't tell them that they will be prepared for every conceivable scenario. I can't tell people that I have all of the answers. However, I can make some promises. I can promise that I will to everything I can to make sure that what I pass along to them has been shown to work more often than not. I can promise that if I don't know the answer to a question or a scenario I will do everything I can to acquire that answer from someone that knows better than I. I can promise that I care more about their safety than making a few bucks. I can also promise that I will continue to study, research, and train in order to make sure that what I am passing along will provide those that apply it the best options under the given circumstances that they may be forced to face. The question is...how many of the charlatans of the world can say the same thing?szornhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03970553671566361183noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20415954.post-40709741190945409182014-01-22T18:31:00.002-05:002014-01-22T18:31:42.705-05:00Self-Defense Blunders #8 - Pepper Spray Gadgets

I
have discussed the pros and cons of various safety-related gadgets and
gimmicks before. However, I feel the need to discuss a specific type of
gadget that is being shamelessly promoted to women as an effective means
of self-defense.

Pepper
spray, technically known as Oleoresin Capsicum or OC for short can be
an effective tool for self-defense under certain circumstances and IF
it’s properly used. Like any defensive tool, there are numerous factors
that will determine
whether or not pepper spray is effective which is why training is
essential. That said, it is still a good tool for those seeking
non-lethal options for keeping themselves safe from assault. The problem
isn’t the tool itself but the deviant manufacturers and
sales people that have turned a decent tool into just another novelty
personal safety gadget in order to make a profit.

Over
the years manufacturers have offered numerous canister designs for
pepper spray ranging from large fire extinguisher style models to
compact keychain designs. This essentially provides more options and
encourages more people to purchase
pepper spray. However, manufacturers are now going to great lengths to
create designs that are not only more convenient but more attractive to
consumers. This includes the Pepper Spray Ring which has been available
for many years and now the more commonly
available Pepper Spray Bracelet. These items are worn just like any
other form of jewelry but actually conceal small canisters of pepper
spray. The keyword there is “small”. The idea is that the convenience of
these items will encourage women to wear them
regularly thus having a means of self-defense with them at all times.
Of course this all makes perfect sense in theory but unfortunately,
reality is another story.

As
I mentioned before pepper spray has its place and can be an effective
defensive tool. However, like other self-defense tools it requires a
solid understanding of the strengths and weaknesses. First off, to be
effective the tool must
be easily accessible. I readily agree that having the spray attached to
the finger or wrist would make the tool easily accessible, at least
under normal conditions. However, that is the only pro for these novelty
gadgets. Where the real issues come into play
is the design and size of the containers. In order to make them low
profile and convenient to wear the size of the containers must be
greatly reduced. Obviously the smaller the container, the less pepper
spray the container will hold. The smaller the container,
the smaller the nozzle is going to be. The smaller the nozzle, the more
difficult it will be to hit the target area of a violently-moving
attacker. Starting to see the big picture? The reality is that under the
stress of a violent attack it will be difficult
to effectively hit the face of the attacker with the spray. Even if you
are lucky enough to hit the target on the first shot there is no
guarantee that it will immediately incapacitate the attacker. The truth
is that you may completely miss the first shot
or two until you are able to successfully hone in on the target through
visual referencing. Even then it may require several bursts of spray to
completely engulf the eyes, not to mention the nose and mouth. While
several direct shots MAY slow or incapacitate
an attacker, I wouldn’t bet my life on it. That being the case, it only
seems logical that the container be large enough to hold the minimum
amount of pepper spray needed to effectively hit the desired target and
that the nozzle be the appropriate diameter
to disperse an accurate and effective dose. It would also only be
logical to assume that the pepper spray may not slow or stop the threat
and that you may be required to rely on a back-up tool or empty-hand
skills to protect yourself.

One
other thing that must be considered that is generally overlooked by
unaware customers…these devices require the use of BOTH hands to be used
effectively against an attacker. While the ring or bracelet is worn on
one hand, the other
hand must be used to engage the device in order to spray the attacker.
What happens when one hand is grabbed or even injured? The sad reality
is that this would make these novelty devices completely inoperable.

Obviously
the creators of such gadgets have never found themselves facing a
violent attack. If they had they would know how chaotic, scary, and
messy such attacks can be. There is often little opportunity or the
ability to employ fine motor
skills such as pulling small pins or pushing small buttons and rarely
would a person be able to devote two hands to such an act since they
would be too busy fending off or striking the attacker.

If
you should choose to carry pepper spray as a defensive option please
don’t risk your safety or life with these novelty gadgets. Be sure to
seek out proper training first and foremost. Next, take time to choose a
container of appropriate
size. Basically it should fit your hand and be large enough to hold
multiple (at least 4 or 5) large bursts of pepper spray. The button or
plunger should be large enough to accommodate your thumb and allow easy
deployment with only one hand. Forgo the novelty
designs if safety is a true concern. When in doubt stick to the classic
container designs that have been in use for nearly 30 years and have
been shown to be effective even under duress.

Learn to harness the power of adrenaline and effectively turn it
against the attacker using FULL-FORCE strikes to vital areas along with
simple ground escape maneuvers. NOTE: this is NOT wrestling or MMA-style
ground fighting. It provides simple skills that anyone can use to
escape a ground assault.

The course will address worst case scenarios such as:

-Fighting off a mounted attacker from various positions
-Fighting from the guard position
-5 simple strikes that work in almost any situation
-Power Grappling to use adrenaline to fight for your life

Location- Warsaw, Indiana
Date- Sunday March 30th, 2014
Time- 1pm to 4pm
Cost- $60 per person

Suitable for women, men, and teens ages 13 and older.
Halloween is just around the corner and it can one of the most festive and entertaining holidays of the year for the entire family. Trick-or-treating, costume parties and haunted houses all add to the fun of the Halloween weekend. However, the fun can quickly turn to disaster if parents and children choose to ignore dangerous people, places, and situations. Before sending your children out to enjoy the holiday activities take the time to talk with them about possible scenarios they may be forced to face and how to successfully resolve them. Below is a list of general safety tips to help keep children safe this Halloween.

-Young children should always go trick-or-treating with a parent or trusted adult.

-Older children / teens should never trick-or-treat alone. They should have at least 2 buddies go with
them, if not a parent or trusted adult.

-Plan your child's entire route and make sure they stick to it.

-Make sure that children are wearing flame retardant costumes.

-Make sure the costumes do not obstruct your child's vision.

-Avoid costumes or bags that display your child's name on them.

-Provide your children with snacks before they go out so they will be less tempted to eat candy before it's checked. Make sure to check out all candy before your children eat it.

-Children should be very cautious of people they don’t know or people displaying strange behavior.

-Children should be taught how to respond to potentially dangerous people or situations. They should run, shout, and get help when they can.

-Teach children to yell "Fire!" rather than help if they find themselves in an unsafe situation and need to draw attention.

-They should be taught Kid Escape or other similar abduction prevention skills.

-They should be taught to check first before going anywhere with anyone, especially with people they
don’t know or don’t know very well.

-Children should accept treats only in the doorway. Never go inside a house, an apartment, or car.

-Teach your children to be polite, make sure they say thank you for their treats.

-Children shouldn't play near lit jack-o-lanterns.

-Children should visit only those houses where the lights are on and only in neighborhoods familiar to you.

-They should walk, not run.

-Children should walk only on sidewalks and driveways, and avoid short-cuts or secluded areas.

-They should cross the street at the corner or in a crosswalk and obey traffic signals.

-They should carry a flashlight and other reflective items such as treat bags or glowing bracelets.

I don’t need self-defense…I have a ______ (gun, pepper spray, knife, baton, or some
other personal protective device).

Many people would be surprised at how many times I have
heard this statement (or something similar) over the past 24 years. Some people
often have this delusion that as long as they own some kind of personal
protective tool or device that they will be safe from crime and violence. They
think that just because they own a gun that it will miraculously appear in
their hand the very moment they find themselves facing a lethal threat.
Unfortunately reality is another story. When I hear such statements my initial
knee-jerk response is to blurt out “So, where is the tool at this very
moment?”. While not necessarily the most courteous response, it often serves to
prove the point rather well. The three most common responses to this question-
1) It’s in my purse, 2) It’s in my car, and 3) It’s at home. Upon answers like
this I obviously feel the need to further prove my point by asking “So, how is
this life-saving tool going to protect you right here and right now when you
don’t have immediate access to it?” Generally, people don’t know what to say in
response. Why not? Because they have never seriously considered such a
scenario. Apparently, for some people just the fact of owning some kind of
protective tool or device provides them with some fulfilling sense of security,
even if the tool in question is not within their immediate reach. Obviously
this kind of false sense of security is extremely dangerous and actually
increases the probability that a person will become a victim of crime or
assault.

The tool must be
easily accessible-

To be clear, for any protective tool or device to be
effective, it must be within immediate reach of the intended victim. So, what exactly do I mean by “immediate”?
Ideally, this would mean having the tool in the hand and ready to go. However,
if that is a little impractical then the next best solution would be for the
tool to be accessible within a single second. In other words, it must be
positioned on the person or within reach so that the intended victim can grab
it, draw it, and use it in less than a second. While I agree that there may be
some situations that provide more time to deploy a protective tool, it’s those
worst-case scenarios we need to worry about.
If you can’t get the tool out quickly when needed, it does absolutely no
good to have it.

You must be
properly trained-

So, you have gone to all of the trouble to make sure the
tool is within immediate reach. As an attacker bears down on you with fists or
weapons, you are now able to successfully grab the tool and bring it in play. Now
what? Do you know how to properly use the tool? Do you understand the legal,
moral, and ethical ramifications of using this tool? Are you prepared to face
criminal charges should this person be injured or killed during your defense?
Do you know how to prevent the attacker from disarming you and then turning
that tool against you?

The reality is that just owning the tool and having
immediate access to it, is not enough. You must be properly trained to use the
tool in defense of your life or that of your loved-ones. You must fully
understand the physical, emotional, and legal ramifications of being forced to
physically protect yourself. Most importantly, you need to make sure you understand
how to avoid having your tool taken from you and then turned against you.

You must have
other skills-

Unfortunately, even if you are properly trained with the
tool in question and you have immediate access to it during a violent
situation, there are not guarantees that you will prevail. This is especially
true if you have no back-up skills to support the use of the tool. In other
words, what happens if the tool fails to work or if it get’s knocked from your
grasp during a chaotic struggle? Do you have immediate access to another
back-up tool? Will you have the time or opportunity to deploy it? Will you be
required to resort to empty-hand defensive skills in order access the back-up
tool or to simply escape the altercation? Have you been properly training in
empty-hand skills?

Unfortunately real-world violence involves many
unpredictable variables. Even if you successfully deploy your protective tool
of choice, there is no guarantee it will slow or stop the attacker. Real
attackers have been known to endure multiple gunshot wounds while they
continued their attack, some fatally wounding their intended victim. This being
the case, it’s always a good idea to have a back-up plan and even a back-up
tool in place for when things don’t go as you envisioned.

You need mental
preparation-

While there are many percentages thrown around regarding the
physical and mental aspects of self-defense, the majority of instructors agree
that the ability to survive violence is more dependent on mental preparation
than physical skills. In order to successfully escape a violent altercation you
must be willing to use the tools and tactics at your disposal. Just having the
tool and the knowledge to use it is of little help if you are not mentally
prepared to deal with the ramifications that may follow.

Don’t be lured into the false sense of security that often
comes with the ownership of a gun or some other protective tool. Personal
protection and self-defense is more than just owning a gun or learning a few
physical skills. It’s about understanding proper and effective responses to
violent situations with and without weapons. It’s about learning to avoid bad
situations and having a plan for those worst-case scenarios just in case, and also
having a back-up for when that initial plan fails. It’s about empowering you
with real knowledge and skills to effectively keep yourself and your loved-ones
safe from crime and assault.

many of our beliefs and fears concerning weapons as depicted by
movies, press, and horror stories of assaults from victims who simply
didn’t know better. Students will then practice simple proven

In order to effectively survive the attack of a
knife-wielding assailant we must have a plan already in place before the attack
occurs. While there are different ways of dealing with these types of attacks,
some are better than others.

The steps provided below represent a logical and effective
means of successfully escaping a knife-wielding assailant. However, there are
no guarantees when it comes to self-defense training. The key to survival is
based more on mental preparation than physical techniques and tactics.

Step #1- Escape:

If you find yourself facing a knife-wielding attacker (or
any weapon for that matter), you first objective should be to put as much
distance between you and the threat as quickly as possible. This is no time for
feeding the ego. Unless the attacker is an immediate threat to you, your loved
ones, or someone else…run away.

Step #2- Use of Barriers:

If for some reason you are unable to immediately exit the
situation, the next best option is to place environmental barriers between
yourself and the attacker. The idea is to make it more difficult for the
attacker to reach you with the weapon. If he can’t reach you, he can’t inflict
injury. Large or fixed environmental barriers generally work best. This could
be an automobile, a light post, a trash dumpster, a counter-top, a large desk,
tables, chairs, etc. Essentially anything that can slow the attacker’s forward
movement. Keep in mind that this is only a temporary solution until you can
safely put distance between you and the threat.

Step #3- Use of Firearms, Edged Weapons, and Batons

If you carry some kind of personal protection tool like a
firearm this would be the place to employ it. If you can’t immediately escape
you should still attempt to create some distance and put barriers between you
and the threat. This barrier may buy you time to respond by drawing your own
weapon. Obviously a firearm would have a greater advantage here as it can be
used from a distance. However, the tool you choose to carry should be based on
your own personal preference and lifestyle. The key is to remember that escape
is more important than trying to engage the attacker. Even if you have a tool
on your person it will still require the opportunity to get it out. The best
way to create that opportunity is to put space or barriers between you.

Step #4- Use of Improvised Weapons:

If you choose not to carry a tool specific for personal
protection or there are not any large environmental objects that can be used as
barriers, I would suggest the application of personal and environmental objects
as weapons of defense. Basically this would be any movable item that can be
picked up and used as a shield or as a striking implement. This might include
small chairs or stools, small tables, lamps, trash cans, back packs, a briefcase,
heavy books, broom or mop handles, etc. Items found immediately on your person
can also be used such as belts, pocket change (for throwing), heavy water
bottle, cell phone, etc. However, it’s important to keep in mind that even if
you have some kind of item on your person or within reach, the attack may happen
so fast that you lack the time or the opportunity to grab the item. Please
don’t fixate on trying to find a weapon so much that you neglect to protect
yourself from the immediate attack. Again, remember that the objective is to
always seek out a path of escape. Do not stay and attempt to engage a
knife-wielding assailant if there is an opportunity to escape.

Step #5- Empty-Hand Defense

There are generally two ways an assailant will attack with a
knife. One way is to use the knife as a means of control, to get what he wants.
In such a case the attacker will display the knife prior to the attack. The
second way is commonly referred to as an ambush. In this case, the attacker
will approach in such a way that the knife remains hidden from view or he may
hide himself behind an object like a tree or a car waiting to attack as you
pass by. If an attacker catches you by surprise, or provides you little
opportunity to use the previous steps, the last-ditch final option is to resort
to empty-hand defense. Keep in mind that if you are in fact attacked by
surprise, you may be initially struck with the knife. The key to such a
situation is to mentally recover as quickly as possible and move into either
immediate counter-attack or escape, if it’s available. Do not let the shock of
the attack keep you from responding appropriately.

If forced to use empty-hand skills against a knife attack,
those skills should be as natural and instinctive as possible. They should be
easy to learn, easy to remember, and easy to apply under the adrenaline response
that is often caused by potential life-or-death altercations. Don’t be lured
into a false sense of security by many of the martial arts techniques that are
often taught for knife defense. If any technique requires a high degree of
skill or above average athletic ability, it may not work for you when you need
it most. Forget the complex wrist locks, knife disarms, or the commonly taught
sparring or kickboxing tactics. This is no time to try to “fight” the attacker
or to out-wrestle him. The objective should be highly focused and savagely
simple…don’t get cut or stabbed (but minimize the wounds if you do), keep the
knife from causing further damage, and immediately neutralize the threat.

There are generally two schools of thought on how to achieve
this objective. One school will have you try to “fight” the attacker, while
neglecting the knife. The emphasis is on trying to avoid the wild slashes and
stabs while either trying to strike the weapon-bearing limb or trying to strike
vital targets in hopes of incapacitating the attacker. In other words, if you
can’t escape you try to kick-box the attacker into unconsciousness while hoping
he doesn’t purposely or incidentally wound you with the knife that you allowed
to freely flail around at the end of his arm. The problem with this general
strategy is that there are no guarantees that any of your strikes will be
effective in slowing or stopping the attacker. There are a number of factors
that help determine a person’s ability to strike effectively in such a
situation. This can include the defender’s general striking ability, accuracy,
speed, power, coordination, agility, susceptibility to the adrenal response, general
athleticism, and the amount of time invested in training. We must also take
into consideration these same factors in relation to the attacker. We must also
consider the attacker’s resistance to pain and impact, whether through mental
tolerance or use of drugs, alcohol, etc. The reality is that unless a person is
highly trained, fairly athletic, and able to hit like a pro boxer, these
commonly taught dance and strike tactics may not be the ideal response. If you
are not able to immediately incapacitate the attacker he may have time and
opportunity to turn the tides and severely injure or kill you with the knife.

The second school of thought takes all of the previously
mentioned factors into consideration. While the emphasis is also on avoiding
the wild slashes and stabs, this school also prefers to directly or indirectly
control the weapon-bearing limb in some fashion. However, the control of the
knife arm is only a small piece of the whole puzzle. This control is performed
in such a way that it inhibits the attacker’s ability to use the knife while
the defender viciously counter-attacks vital targets. Keep in mind that this is
not some “wrestling” strategy or a means to attempt some intricate joint-lock
or knife disarm. Also, this is not about catching the attacking limb out of the
air as some martial artists frequently demonstrate. It’s simply an instinctive
method to slow the use of the arm (for a split second) in order to allow for
more effective striking techniques and follow-up, all without the worry of the
knife flailing around like a fan blade.
As previously mentioned, accurately striking the vital targets on a
moving attacker isn’t always easy.
However, through the use of limb control which enhances tactile and
kinesthetic sensitivity, not only is striking these vital targets easier but
it’s also more accurate. This is obviously important during the chaotic nature
of real assaults. All of this being said, it’s important to note that there are
a variety of ways a defender can “control” the attacker’s weapon-bearing limb. This
might include grabbing the wrist with one or two hands, hugging the arm in some
fashion, or applying forward pressure to the elbow or upper-arm bone. Another
option is indirect control through manipulation of the attacker’s head and
spine. The reality is that some of these tactics are better than others.
However, some limb control is always better than none. The best thing about this particular school of
thought is the fact that it’s based on natural and instinctive responses. In
other words, control of the weapon-bearing limb is what the majority of
intended victims will attempt without any previous training. There are hundreds of documented reports and
many CCTV video clips to verify this. While it’s true that these cases didn’t
always result in survival for the victim, we have been able to learn that in
many cases they did attempt to control the weapon-bearing limb in some fashion.
We have also been able to learn that the
majority of people that have survived knife attacks also employed a limb
control at some point during the attack. However, the key to effectively using
this method as a means of surviving a knife attack is to go beyond instinct and
train with specific tactics and strategies that are based on this innate
response.

When trying to decide which school of thought to follow,
keep in mind that there are other critical issues that are often overlooked. As
an example, are the tactics applicable to women, teens, and seniors or are they
specific to young athletic men? Are the skills applicable to ground attacks,
when mobility is limited? Example- if
you find yourself on the ground with a knife attacker sitting on top of you,
will the same tactics work? Will the tactics work with limited mobility or in
confined spaces such as airplane aisles, on a bus, a train, or some other close
quarter environment? The reality is that many of the techniques and tactics
taught for knife defense will not work in many of these cases.

With all of this in mind, it’s important to note that with
the use of proper awareness the chances of being attacked with a knife are
fairly low. However, that doesn’t mean that you should not be physically or
mentally prepared to escape such an attack should you find yourself facing this situation.
